@sonhouse

Well, don't think so.

"They didn’t build that cell completely from scratch. Instead, they started with cells from a very simple type of bacteria called a mycoplasma."

They took what was already there and tweaked it and said, "created a single-celled synthetic organism" I think they overstated what they did.

It is synthetic in the sense that it never occurred in nature, it is a new organism but like I said it wasn't from scratch. But every new experiment like that will lead to life from scratch in my opinion anyway.
Time will tell.
But of course you have a built in defense, you just proved life has to have a creator.....

When they get done making whatever it is they make, it will have a creator.

We are already making a new life form, called AI.
There was a recent conference of AI and humans where they were asked questions and the answers sounded like humans but the words were not just programmed in like a recording, they were answering questions nobody knew in advance.
The question now is how long will it take before these AI robots are literally conscious, and they are sentient. There was a warning letter signed by 1000 AI workers warning humanity of dangers of AI, where they might be more intelligent than humans and if they wanted to take over we could not stop them.
So new laws will be coming out restricting how they interact with humans with safeguards in place so they don't just take over or wipe out humans completely.
It is a new life form and we are seeing the development of them as we speak.

No, the “A” in AI stands for Artificial for a reason. A lot of human efforts are being made to turn that into something useful. I use it to help me code in VBA. Beyond things where the questions are narrowly based where the questions have to do with math and coding the programming is going to be heavily influenced by the programmers.

Ideology, Politics, Theology, which soup tastes better are not things that AI will be able to figure out on its own. The programming language will have some factors weighing heavier than others and the hardware doesn’t know right from wrong. It will only know blue is preferred over orange if it gets coded that way.

Oh, bull. AI is nothing but patching sentence fragments together. Tbere is no intelligence in it whatsoever. It'll accuse a lawyer of being a paedophile as soon as stating that he was the prosecutor in the case - an a couple of weeks ago, did just that. Anyone believing AI is intelligent, let alone "life", is a fool of the most gullible kind.

Just wait a few years, it is going to sneak up on us, eventually robots WILL be sentient and we better have back door code where we can shut them down if they say decide to off mankind completely or at least take over the governments of all human countries and the like. Right now, you are correct, nothing but a fancy dictionary/history/library world wide data net making it LOOK like they are sentient but far from it.
That won't last much longer.
THAT is what I am talking about when I say AI.
Can you imagine sentient hyper intelligent robots with full scale quantum computers to help them in whatever program they come up with? Besides taking over EXA flop classical computers.
Come back in ten years if you think that is hyperbole.
Goodby truck drivers for instance, AI driven trucks taking away millions of truck driver jobs or surgeons out of a job because robots performing surgery much more precisely than ANY human.
Just a couple of example of how the world WILL be changing because of the rise of sentient AI.
What happens if they become literally more intelligent, more creative than ANY human? We better have back doors into their software so we can cut them off if they try to take over or attack humanity.
I assume you figure that is all hyperbole but just wait, those kind of thing may actually happen if we don't prepare VERY carefully for that era.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Meanwhile, A"I" is nothing of the kind, and proves it every single day.

AI is simply great code, but nothing about it is life, computers are machines we can turn on and off that do what we program them to do. They never do what we want, only what we tell them. On narrow bases, they can give answers to complex questions but there is no concept of truth in a computer outside of the truth tables we install.

Its uses will vary and like all things we touch we can rob a bank with a weapon or protect a home, it is the heart of the one using it that makes it good or bad. The thing itself, like the gun, doesn't have a will of its own, so it will always be a tool.

I think humans think they are so smart NOTHING can be smarter. I think they will find out the hard way, just like Kasparov found out when he played that comp back in the 90's, he said NO computer will ever beat me.
And I am not talking about next week or next year but maybe 20 years away from sentience.
Follow Moore's law, we kept thinking it will come to a halt somewhere in time but we have kept it up for 30 odd years now or more,

A narrow band of information the computer will run rings around a person, like math, chess, and computer programming. Outside of that all of the truth tables the computer will have to rely on will be given to it by a programmer, moral questions, physiological ones, where judgment calls come into play where it will find answers are the answers someone puts into them.

You are being naive. It is going to happen sooner or later.
What I wonder is if truly intelligent sentient robots will consider humans as pets.
