Christianity has a long history of 'absorbing' perceived threats (pagan practices and the like) and I think Kelly has been trying to do the same thing with evolution. So, perhaps it is less him being 'scared that understanding it might shake (his) beliefs' and more that it is easier to absorb a watered down version of evolution. Therefore, having a deeper and more thorough understanding of evolution is not in his interest.

I believe in evolution, not however a common ancestor for a huge host of reasons.

Yes, but rose bushes, jellyfish, eagles, cats, grass, and all other life forms did not come from them.

Humans have evolved significantly over the last 1-2 million years (from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens).

How does the Adam and Eve narrative possibly fit it into this process? - I am told repeatedly by Christians that I shouldn't cherry pick from the Bible. Sorry Kelly, but the same goes for evolution.
