"Carry On Wayward Son" is a rock song by the band Kansas, from the 1976 album Leftoverture. This song, along with "Dust in the Wind" were both written by Kerry Livgren and were arguably Kansas' highest charting songs ever.

Here are the lyrics:

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high

Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say

Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know

On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say

Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
No!

...
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, none can equal the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
Carry on, my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry (Don't you cry no more)
No more

I want to discuss the meaning of this song. Everyone seems to have their own opinion of what this song means.

Kerry Livgren became a Christian in 1980, four years after this song was written. He says the song is about searching for the right spirituality for you, but I think the lines

"Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you"

seem to be more about "finding", rather than mere "searching".

What say you? Does this song resonate for you, and in what way?

Good choice of video, this is nearly identical to the rendition played on rock radio stations in America. Kansas in concert is a treat and I have seen many rock groups in concert and this was, without a doubt, the loudest concert I've ever seen. This band is LOUD in concert. When I saw them, America opened for them.

I created this thread in response to at least three threads that have devolved into the usual suspects just sniping and spitting at each other.

Can we please have a thread without all the childish name-calling and venom for once?

There are several threads which are in juxtaposition to the willy-waving-faeces-flicking of the two (well one really) resident twats. If your thread doesn’t attract much interest it’s not because people don’t like you, the website, sonship or the Democratic Party.

Are you out of your mind?

Just kidding.

I grew up on "sex, drugs and rock-n-roll". I've heard every song ten thousand times. It all sucks for me now anymore.

"... the right spirituality for..." me precludes "effection...for things on the earth".

Sorry. I hope I didn't poop on the party.

Presumably you mean "affection"?

It seems a very drastic thing to think and say. Are there things on earth that are, in fact, not included in what you are lumping together under the term "things on earth"?

Affection for them is "precluded" by your spirituality? Why?

You presume correctly.

I have a strong affection for creation. It's the 'things' on the earth I'm not so fond of. Things that distract from God.

Do I need to elaborate? The Word of God draws a clear and distinct deference between good and evil. I am but a pilgrim here. Soon I will be going home where my affection is.

It was just one of those knee jerk reactions.

I'm over it now. It was just an eruption of my mean old self. 😉

So "things on earth" is a term you use as a synonym for "evil"?

So do you believe music is precluded by "the right spirituality"?

Are you asking that because you don't know the difference between good and evil?
