It is an excellent chess book.

There are a few typos - for the rest, I liked especially the thoughts behind this paragraph/phrase

"Sowing the seeds of problems where none actually exisit is a handy psychological tool."

(note the typo)

Sounds cool. But the target group 1500-2000 is above my level 🙁

There should be more edgy chessbooks in my opinion. And we need a new Chernev that just loves the game, and can write like Hemmingway.

the 1500 is just a guide - in the review I was going to suggest
be lowered and the 2000 be raised. This is a good book for any level.

I agree with Chernev though - he was good. (also untitled).

His Most Instructive Games is a great book.

(not though nothing about fianchetto defences (1) game).

Chernev did not quite understand them so he stayed away from them.

Great review...hard to resist picking up a copy!

Been emailed by an a very old friend.

he reminded me I was one of the first to give Chess for Tigers
a good review in my own chess magazine about 30 years ago.

I forgot all about that else I would have mentioned it. (damn!).

The original was 1.P-K4 P-K4 in old descriptive.

Just had an email saying this is all one of my jokes.

Years ago I made up a book including a lovely cover and gave
it a brilliant review. Of course it never existed.

I said Keith Ruxton had two copies. He was pestered beyond belief for it.
(an IM actually fell for it as well - he was not too chuffed).

My past is catching up with me.

IT'S NOT A JOKE. (I swear it's not a joke - other reviews will be out soon).

Another time (when I had my magazine) I invented a tournament
with cross tables, games pictures of the winner etc etc.

That fooled a lot people as well.
The result was actually published in a national magazine.

Ahhh the good old days.

Most serious typo in review is "(26...Qxf4 27.Nf4)", which should read "(26...Qxf4 27.Nge6+)".

Who is the woman in the audience (in fact she is the audience) in the picture at the end of the review?

If this book can be compared favourably with Chess for Tigers, then that is high praise indeed. The author of Chess for Tigers, Simon Webb, was a strong player (an IM?) who was sadly murdered by his own son just a few years ago.
