I learned to play chess in a rural Alberta high school from a newly arrived Brit math teacher (who also introduced the boys to soccer, or "football" as he called it). Consequently, I've been tinkering with the rudiments of this game for over half a century now. Still trying to improve my game, but always enjoying this mindful distraction.
