I wanted to work on a more attacking version of the Albin Counter Gambit against Queen's gambit. I got away with a few mistakes on this one, but there were several things that make it interesting: Mating threats on both sides that needed to be considered. An insane attacking attitude by me (black) An opponent who saw the threats and countered with many of his own. An open/attacking game. The last 7 or so moves are all forced with several mating threats. At the time the game was played, both players were rated around 1450.

1. d4 d5 2. c4

Standard Q Gambit at this point

2... e5

Classic Albin Counter Gambit

3. dxe5 d4 4. Ng1f3

By the book, avoiding the Lasker Trap: e3 Bb4+ Bd2 dxe3 Bxb4 exf2+ (King cannot capture the pawn, else Qxd1.) Ke2 fxg1=Knight+ Rxg1 Bg4+ and wins Queen

4... Nb8c6

By the book

5. g3

preparing to fianchetto and castle King side

5... Bc8f5

! Key to the attacking theme. Threats include c2 square with knight, and d3 to advance pawn if white plays e3

6. a3

preventing Nb4 and the subsequent attack on c2

6... Qd8d7

setting up an attack on the finachetto'd bishop; enabling Q side castling which adds the rook to the d pawn's defense.

7. Bf1g2 f6

clear out the pawn to develop my knight

8. exf6 Ng8xf6 9. O-O Bf5h3

clear out the bishop then send a pawn down the H file to open it up and mate him

10. Nf3g5

clever move to attack the bishop with a second piece, and open up the bishop's diagonal to attack my queen side

10... Bh3xg2

If he won't trade bishops, then I will

11. Kg1xg2 h6

remove the knight so I can start the attack

12. Ng5f3 h5

finally

13. b4

His counter - remove one of my d pawn defenders and attack the Q side

13... O-O-O

protect the d file

14. Qd1a4

once my knight is gone his Q has a backdoor on a7

14... Kc8b8

protect the a pawn - sadly delaying my attack

15. b5

no surprise here

15... Nc6e7

I really plan on attacking his king side so I get to retreat with a view to attack again on the g and h files

16. c5 h4

I ignore his last move and try get some tempo with the attack

17. Nf3xh4

I lose the pawn but the rook is open and in play now down the H file

17... Ne7f5

wanna trade ? If he does I get to send the queen to h3 with a real threat.

18. Nh4xf5 Qd7xf5 19. b6

now his attack looks strong - although I have tempo and a crazy attack I am pretty vulnerable right here. Do I let the queen in? do I open the diagonal for his bishop? Do I do the minimum to block him and get back to my attack...hmm

19... Bf8xc5

Not sure if this was brilliant or stupid. It does not prevent Qxa7+ but I think I can survive that attack after moving the king to c8 and then d7.

20. bxc7

He decides to chase my King and develop his own attack here

20... Kb8xc7 21. Bc1f4 Kc7c8

looking dangerous - but at least the pawns are gone! My king can no longer move though so feeling really vulnerable here

22. Rf1c1

! threatening Rxc5++ (if my Queen is not there to protect the bishop). Now the race to mate begins - rather risky but pretty elegant and every move is pretty much forced - lots of mating threats on my side. And his.

22... Rh8xh2

!? Yes - I think this is the game changer!

23. Kg2xh2

?? He should have moved the king to g1. Once he takes he bait I control the rest of the game, as the moves are all forced. Each move I make after this must put him in check, as once my Queen moves from protecting my Bishop I am one move away from losing with his Rxd5++ threat.

23... Rd8h8 24. Kh2g2

Pretty much forced.

24... Qf5e4 25. f3 Qe4xe2 26. Kg2g1 Qe2h2

Not d4+ giving check with the bishop as Rxc5+ and I lose

27. Kg1f1 Qh2h1 28. Kf1e2 Rh8h2 29. Ke2d3 Qh1xf3 30. Kd3c4

His king blocks his rook from checking me on c5, so I get to make a non-checking move.

30... Rh2b2

This move sets up the win. He cannot check me and I threaten him on all sides. If Kxc5 Qd5++

31. Rc1c2

trying to force the trade and dissolve my attack

31... b5

This makes me smile. Once again, if Kxc5 Qd5++

32. Qa4xb5 Qf3d5

I want the Queen without trading a rook for it.

33. Kc4d3 Rb2xb5

I will have the queen now, thanks. He resigns. The material is not that uneven but Black is far ahead positionally.
