The splendid Hammerschlag opening, theme of the tournment.
1. d5
The best way to deal with Hammerschlag is to force pawns ahead.
1... d4
Now the game becomes a big chain of pawns. It was my first game with Hammerschlag, and I didn't know how to evolve.
2. e4 h4 3. h5 e3 4. f5 f4 5. g6 c4 6. c6 c5 7. b5 cxb6 8. axb6 Ng1h3
I'm trying to find a way to get through the chain of pawns.
9. b5 b4
Holding his pawn advance.
10. Ng8e7 Nh3g5 11. Nb8d7
This mistake allowed me to put my knight on e6 and treat the Black Queen.
11... Ng5e6 12. Qd8b6 Nb1d2 13. Bf8h6 Nd2b3
Now I'm seeing another way to get in with the other knight.
14. Nd7b8 Nb3c5
Two knights protecting each other.
15. Nb8d7 Nc5xd7 16. Bc8xd7 Ne6c5 17. Bd7c8 a4 18. g5 fxg5 19. Bh6xg5 hxg5 20. Qb6c7 a5 21. f4 exf4 22. Bc8g4 Bf1e2 23. Ne7f5 Be2xg4
He could capture the bishop at g4...
24. Nf5g7
... but he moves the knight back...
24... Bg4d7
... and I can treat the King. The Black King can move either to d8 or f8 with no fear of a fork from the White Knight in e6 to capture the Black Queen, because the Black Knight is protecting e6.
25. Ke8d8
The King moves to d8...
25... f5
... I offer a pawn to the Knight, to move him out of e6 protection...
26. Ng7xf5
... and Black takes the bait!!! :D
26... Nc5e6
Now the big fork to capture the Black Queen!
27. Kd8xd7 Ne6xc7 28. Kd7xc7 Bc1f4 29. Kc7d7 a6 30. Rh8f8 Rh1xh5 31. e3 Bf4xe3 32. Nf5g7
I didn't spot this move and lost my Hook.
32... Kf2g1 33. Ng7xh5 Qd1xh5 34. Ra8e8 Be3f2 35. Rf8h8 Qh5f7 36. Kd7d6 Bf2g3 37. Re8e5 Bg3xe5
Checkmate.
